Why I’m so bad at this

By this I mean blogging. I mean, I am probably bad at many other things but for the sake of my self-image, let’s just take one at a time. When Behind the Eyes came out, I was told by my publisher that I needed to have a site where I could communicate with readers. Ideally, she said, you should be writing a blog at least once a week. Once a week? I don’t have enough to write once a year. Look at the last time I wrote something here and you’ll see what I’m talking about. If I were to write once a week, I would have to resort to telling my imaginary readers (And I’m a one hundred percent certain that there are no real, live and kicking, actual persons who ever read this webpage) about the snow on my driveway and how hard it is to shovel it. Nevertheless, I’ve decided that in 2008 I’m going to be more relaxed about blogging. No longer will I wait to write something useful or inspiring. From now on, I’ll write about the books I read, the movies I see, the music I hear, the people I meet, the candidates I like, TV shows, video games, the weather, celebrities, my dreams, restaurants, food. I am in so in awe of those good writers who can blog almost every day about the most common things which they somehow turn into subjects that are not just personal but communal. How wonderful it would be to have such freedom, such humility and lack of inhibition. Okay, in 2008 I will be more open and try as hard as I can to make universal bread from the dough of the particular.

    Afternoon, Francisco!

I’d like to think you’re wrong about there not being any live and kicking actual persons reading your webpage, but I think you’re closer to right than I would wish.

See, I built your website as part of a team that builds web pages for writers and other creative individuals, I’m really, really uncertain of their actual value. They don’t attract readers, and I worry that blogs for writers dilute the writers’ talents (if you’re writing here, you’re giving it away for free instead of writing what you ought to be writing); and I just wonder about the rationale for the whole websites for writers thing. I don’t blow smoke, so I don’t just make up benefits for these things or swear you’ll be the next Hemingway / Fitzgerald / King / Rowling (you name it) if only you build a website.

I mean, I hope there IS a reason for them since a large part of my income depends on building these sites, but if they don’t exist to sell books via e-commerce (and nobody ever buys books from writers’ websites; if they want to buy, they go to Amazon or to the little shop around the corner, we could hope), and if it’s not to read their blogs (who would, afterall? I only came to see if it still works), then what are these sites really for?

I suppose they save a lot of chatter if you can just say, “See my website” for routine questions and answers, but is that enough reason for building these things? Are they just extended book jackets (or should I drop the “just” and trumpet that they’re extended book jackets and as such a valuable part of your promotion?). Is it just something that’s *expected* these days, that a legitimate project (like a book) will have its own existence on the web?

What’s it all about, Francisco? How could this be more useful to you?

    dc

  2. Francisco Stork Says:

Thank-you for the great comment David. You’re right in everything you say and the questions you ask are right on mark. I think that a website for a writer whose books are read by young adults can be helpful in providing additional information about the book or the author. The questions and material for teachers found in this site are a good example. I think the site may also be helpful in putting out there every once in a while some thoughts on various subjects that may be of interest to a person who read the books and was attracted to the author’s material or philosophy. But I am with you that website should not be seen as a marketing tool or as an outlet for creativity. (At least for myself. There are some websites of young adult writers that are very engaging and that reflect frequent use by the author and the readers.) The frequent blogging piece is what is hard for me. I feel that too much use of it dilutes a certain private space I need to protect in order to write. And there is such a thing as diluting already fast diminishing brain power! Blogging is a temptation because at first sight it appears similar to the other writing that I do. But it is not. It lacks the transformative power of the imagination and it lacks the discipline of selflessness that is needed to write a novel, where the self disappears for the sake of the work. For me, once I understand the limitations of the website, I can use it (and thanks to you it can be used) for its limited purposes. Thanks again.

Though I just read this blog about…well, blogging, and how you’d like to just “write”, and not feel you need to be inspired to blog, I have to tell you the imagery in your post titled “Of Raking Leaves and Writing” was absolutely beautiful and very obviously inspired. I congratulate you for a work of art found in five small, unassuming paragraphs.

Think of this. It’s the dead of winter, snow is piled along the sides of the street and, most importantly, the trees are comatose waiting for spring, and I could actually see and smell the leaves swirling in the wind, frolicking around the tines of your rake. Even better is that you somehow made possible the molding of that imagery with you writing, pen scratching across the “blue-lined paper”. I read the words “trillion zillion” and actually felt a sort of calm frustration that could only exist in such a time of immense, though completely manageable, helplessness.

After all this I thought, why not be inspired all the time, every time? Maybe the answer is not “write less” or “be inspired less while writing more”. Maybe the answer is write more and always be inspired.

Inspiration comes from more than the clichés. I fear the day I know longer find inspiration in the way my tea bag wraps itself like a vine around my teaspoon as I create a whirlpool of my chemically enhanced sugar. Or the day I no longer think of the trees sighing eloquent condemnations of corrupt leaders and levied taxes as I walk the paths along Walden Pond. Or the day I no longer see the beauty of finding a friend in the most unlikely of places at the most unlikely of times, drawn to that person in the most inexplicable of ways.

I love the quote, the answer to the question “why do you write?” in that post—“because it would be worse if I didn’t.” It’s definitely fitting there. But it also has something to say here too.

Maybe doing nothing is worse because what’s better is not simply writing, but writing so that you capture those inspiring moments of your everyday life, however seemingly insignificant to anyone else. Maybe it’s not “not writing” that makes it worse. Maybe what makes it worse is not meticulously cataloging those everyday-inspiring moments before they escape your consciousness. Maybe it’s not simply worse, but unbearable.

  4. Francisco Stork Says:

    Dear Sarah,
It is people like you who are the inspiration. Everywhere I go, beneath the surface of dailyness, I find persons who are alive with spirit and imagination and a desire to find meaning in the mundane moments that fill our lives. I am glad that my words created images and feelings in you - that is the most that a writer can hope for. You can be sure that your words are engraved in my heart and will be remembered always.

Summary : Great Book with Practical Advice I just wanted to congratulate you on your SUMO book. It was a great read and by far and away the best in the self help category that I have read recently.I coach people for a living and read a lot of these types of books and believe that many fail because they are too abstract or too difficult to put into practice. Your book, however, is full of practical things you can do straight away to start to make a difference.I particularly liked the ‘Ditch Doris Day’ chapter. […] A manual for greatness, this is not#8212;a cure for insomnia, quite possibly. Title : A Lifetime of Secrets: A Postsecret Book Author : Frank Warren Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Simply inspiring Unbelievable. Read this book in one sitting. This is the second book of the postsecret series that I have bought and it didn’t disappoint. A complete rollercoaster ride of emotion pours out of this book. Secrets that will make you laugh, make you cry, make you wish you could just give someone a hug and let them know it will be ok. While not a short book, I read it through really quickly because I just wanted to read about more and more peoples’ secrets. I’ve visited the website every week for a year and can’t get enough of this. Hard to believe this world-wide phenomenon started off as a small community art project… Title : Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People for Change Author : William R. Miller Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Short-term benefits Miller and Rollnick have systematised a number of motivational enhancement techniques which have been used, intuitively, by therapists for several decades. In doing so, they have performed a valuable service. As a therapist working with addicted individuals in Cambridge, I have been using the Rollnick-Miller synthesis of MI for some years now - in conjunction with ‘cycle of change’ methodology. The following are my principal observations. Through the use of these MI techniques, I have had some success in helping clients to move from the ‘pre-contemplation’ stage of the cycle of change to the stage of ‘contemplation’. Sessions and strategies of Motivational Interviewing have also proved useful in expediting progress from contemplation, through preparation, to action. I have found, however, that there are three main problems with Motivational Interviewing. Firstly, it has proved relatively ineffective unless repeatedly reinforced and combined with other therapeutic interventions. Secondly the benefits thus gained take a long period of time to become evident. Thirdly these benefits are often of short duration. In its application to addiction, MI does not seem to reduce significantly the incidence of relapse. For these reasons, I now use MI only in the initial stages of therapy. Thereafter, in order to help clients to maintain recovery, I have reverted to the use of more prescriptive techniques - in particular, CBT and Twelve-Step Facilitation. ‘Motivational Interviewing’ is a very expensive book for the slender results that it yields. Borrow it from a public library, if you can. Then decide if you think it’s worth buying. I was in debt up to my eyeballs and spending whatever I earned and more. But with the simple concepts in this book, I am paying off my debt steadily and actually have savings for the first time in my life. I highly recommend this easy/quick read as a life changer. Title : A Lifetime of Secrets: A Postsecret Book Author : Frank Warren Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Heart-Wrenching Glimpses of Excruciating Emotional Pain with Some Humor Have you ever told a stranger something that no one else knows about you? I often think that’s the main purpose of sitting on long airplane flights: Confiding in strangers makes secret burdens emotionally lighter. Frank Warren obviously understands that point and provides a needed outlet for those who can’t even tell a stranger . . . but feel comfortable sending in a postcard with their secret on it. I’m sure thousands of people are walking a little lighter. Much like watching a film of a disaster, you’ll be counting your blessings as you review these often deeply painful admissions. In that way, your own secrets won’t seem so heavy. I suspect that those with unshared secrets can benefit from both sharing and reading what others have shared. Many thanks to Frank Warren for coming up with this unique form of self-therapy. It would be fascinating to ask people in a few years to send in another postcard to describe how sending the original one affected their lives. One of the last postcards in the book explores that point: “i used to write my secrets on postcards that were never posted now i tell them to real people that know and care about me thanks, postsecret and goodbye” My main caution is that I’m not sure how someone who is severely depressed and suicidal might react to this book. Some of the postcards reflect that condition, and someone inclined that way might find encouragement in reading what others have said. From the point of view of wanting to understand others better, I was glad to learn about some secrets people hide that I wasn’t aware of. I’ll be more careful in the future about what I say on those subjects. As I read the postcards, I was reminded of a seminar I attended two years ago where I met a man who told me his family had never celebrated his birthday and no one had hugged him in almost 20 years. Naturally, everyone took turns hugging him, and we held an impromptu birthday celebration. He looked like a new man. I pray that those who sent in these postcards will enjoy years of unexpected hugs. It’s not all sadness. Some of the secrets are meant to be humorous. Others aren’t all that serious . . . but will touch your heart nevertheless. Title : Self-esteem Affirmations: Motivational Affirmations for Building Confidence and Recognizing Self-worth Author : Louise L. Hay Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Lifesaver!!! I’m going a difficult phase of my life now- I just finished my doctorate and currently going through a divorce- and needed something to help boost my self esteem. I found it in this beautiful cd by Louise Hay. The first 2 days I listened to Side B (which is the subliminal part of this cd) I just cried like a baby for the entire track! I didn’t know how much sadness I was carrying inside and this cd really helped me to release some of the negative feelings I had about myself. I still listen to it everyday and feel that it is definitely working to increase the love I have for myself. Title : Think and Grow Rich Author : Napoleon Hill Rating : 2 Stars out of 5. Summary : This edition not the best I have owned this book for years, but I recently have discovered another, newer version that is far superior. It is “Think and Grow Rich!: The Original Version, Restored and Revised” published by Aventine Press. For one thing it is a bigger book, both in size and in pages (412). It turns out that the book that this review is about is an abridged version of the original, something I never knew in all the times I have read it over the years. This smaller version, while good, contains nothing like the additional information in the “Restored and Revised” version. There is just a ton of fascinating facts and information in the back of the book. In the older book (the plain “Think and Grow Rich”), the print is somewhat difficult to read, there is little space for writing notes. The newer version reads better and by comparison is a far more useful learning instrument. Napoleon Hill’s work is probably the most important ever done in the motivational and self-improvement field. Whichever version you read, it will change your life forever. […] Doug Miller’s book helps to reverse this processby teaching us the benefits of positivity. We all know people who appear postive and with such positivity goes success. Not necessarily always in their work but in their lives. The book draws upon the experiences of self motivated people whose lives have taken off because of their attitude and their postive approach to everything they do.There are plenty of techniques with the 192 pages to help the most stubborn pessimist. An ideal present for a disaffected offspring going through an identity crisis. Title : Sink Reflections Author : Marla Cilley Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Get rid of your clutter and your cleaning lady… Discovered the Flylady.net website last year, and bought the book soon afterwards. Since then, our house (and world) has been turned around. A simple system to keep the house clean and uncluttered. Nothing extraordinary, not rocket science, just common sense. But it makes keeping house fun and easy - never thought I’d say that!!! The system might sound a bit crazy at first (drying/shining your sink every night), but give it a shot for a week and you’ll be converted. Buy the book to keep by your bedside, but make sure you sign up for the (free) e-mail service, to get you truly on your way. www.flylady.net Other Related Resources: 1: http://industrialbrand.com/blog/how-to-tell-if-a-web-page-sucks2: http://secondincomesforlife.com/general/7-motivational-quotes-to-brighten-your-day3: http://www.franciscostork.com/blog/2008/01/07/why-im-so-bad-at-this/4: http://www.lowpings.net/gamingnews/half-life-1-deathmatch-classic-news/4-lessons-from-a-half-life-deathmatch-classic-server.html5: http://www.mymeso.org/categories/video/ […]

[…] Title : The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness Author : Stephen R. Covey Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : This book has changed my life! This book has profoundly changed the way I perceive my work, family, and myself. In short, I now have a reverence for the greatness in each of us - and desire to treat others accordingly. As I remember and practice the principles taught so eloquently my Mr. Covey in this book, I find myself at peace with others and myself. There is a spiritual dimension to our lives, relationships and potential that Mr. Covey taps into. Unfortunately, we have ignored these principles for too long in our families, organizations and society. And we have paid the price. Covey’s book is a timely, refreshing and unique contribution that is a must read for everyone who wants to find their talent, passion, need and conscience - their voice! Title : Psycho-cybernetics Author : Maxwell Maltz Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Full of Techniques to Psycho-cybernetics is THE definitive self-help book. I read Maxwell Maltz’s original book and benefited immensely. I was a little wary about reading an update. But I’m glad I did. The information is clearly presented, easy to read and there are practical suggestions for putting the advice into practice. If you have to overcome any bad habit, from shyness, lack of confidence, procrastination, chronic lateness, nail-biting, or anything else, you can do it with psycho-cybernetics. Although this version of the book was written 15 years after Maxwell Maltz’s death, it is all in the first-person, as though Maltz himself had written it. Gives a new meaning to the term “ghost written”! But if you can live with that, it’s a very enlightening book. Title : Getting It Done: How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge Author : Roger Fisher Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Enjoyed it The book is good and it improved my knowledge. I felt a little was lacking in the implementation aspects of leadership skills. I also read a book that would fill this gap and I recommend it….."The Leader’s Guide: 15 Essential Skills." Title : Sink Reflections Author : Marla Cilley Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Great system - poor book I came across Flylady last year, starting with the BabySteps, and found very quickly that I could keep my over-cluttered home clean and tidy by following these routines - this was a great help when my flat went on the market, as it would be ready for viewings with a simple ’swish and swipe’ each morning! I bought the book to help me move onto the next stage of Flylady - decluttering, zone cleaning and the control journal - but I was really disappointed. I found the book poorly laid out (the chapter on babysteps introduces a number of new steps, numbering them would have made the book easier to read and the routines easier to follow) and the tone of writing grated on me after a couple of chapters - too many references to God and how cleaning your home will demonstrate to yourself and your family how much you love yourself and them (I’m not a lazy frump with a filthy house, I’m just a busy full-time worker who can’t keep on top of the housework and can’t afford a cleaner). All of the recommendations in the book, and more, are already covered on the Flylady website. The Flylady system does work, but I would recommend saving yourself a few pounds and using Flylady.net instead of buying the book. 5 stars for the system, 1 star for the book itself. Title : It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be Author : Paul Arden Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Amusing book of vignettes…drawn from the world of advertising, but applicable to life in general… Bought it on a whim from the Tate Modern bookstore. The cover looked good, the book was small, and happened to run across some practical, amusing and witty vignettes - drawn from the world of advertising, but applicable to life in general. For those who don’t have the luxury of time to read much (i.e. working mummy/daddy/etc) - recommend it. […] Title : Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-free Play Author : Neil A. Fiore Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : A top book on procrastination Once in a while a book comes along that makes perfect sense. This is a book written by someone who is extremely wise on this subject. A sage-like quality about it. No surprise that Neil has studied this subject for years. The quality in this book shows.Nearly all the books I’ve read have failed in their mission to get the reader motivated. This book is different. Everyone is unique and everyone has their own entry points. For me I loved the idea of designing one’s day around what one really enjoys, leisure, hobbies, exercise etc. Then peppered around this one build’s half hour slots of time to do some work towards one’s goal. This book builds on the ideas given. Not neccessarily in chronological order. More a 3D model. A layer that also really clicked for me was that instead of focusing on finishing this task, project, goal one has a series of starts. One Starts towards the goal for 30 minutes. Then after this a reward, some fun in life. Then back to the next 30 minute session. What’s reccommended is to take a 2 minute pre-project focus to get the mind in the right vibration(my word) before beginning. Procrastinating uses up valuable energy. It’s a protection of sorts, but it takes energy to procrastinate. The stories of clients in the book makes one feel that this is more common that we tend to think. Some suffer more than others. For me it’s been around for 75% of my life and got worse over the last few years.Having taken voluntary redundancy last November, I thought starting a new career was a simple affair with all this time available. It wasn’t time, it was an out of control procrastination junkie. However, it’s not always so obvious. In Barbara De Angelis’s book Confidence, she speaks of 3 types of confidence, behavioral, spiritual and emotional. In my view if you’ve got procrastiation as the savior of your pain, you will most assurely lack behavioral confidence in yourself. This will be money so well spent. It’s like having an expert right in your hands, helping you every step of the way.For me I realised that I wasn’t living a life of fun, I was still waiting for something to happen before my life begun. Title : The Four Agreements: Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (Toltec Wisdom) Author : Don Miguel Ruiz Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : 4 pointers to show us fallen angels back to paradise lost. I’ve come to believe that the achievement and maintenance of happiness is a day-to-day, moment-to-moment discipline, due to the heavy conditioning we have all received to wallow in and maintain each other in suffering. This book proposes 4 deceptively simple ‘agreements’ to live by in order to free ourselves of that conditioning. If followed, I believe they can radically transform our lives and the lives of those around us. I say this on the basis of how I feel and the changes I have observed in my transactions with other people only 4 days after reading this book and of putting these agreements into practice. Also on the basis of the changes I’ve seen in the people I know who have read and been touched by this book as I have. I don’t think it’s possible not to be touched by it and struck by the sheer basic sense and simplicity of these agreements. All one needs to do is keep them in mind! Stick them on the fridge, beside the loo, in your diary… until they become a natural reflex. Title : Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-free Play Author : Neil A. Fiore Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Informative and practical I gained a great deal of insight from this book. It helped me to see that I’m putting my life on hold through being a perfectionist. And it has given me lots of help in finding a way forward. A new ‘me’ is emerging as a result. Well worth a read. Title : Self-esteem Affirmations: Motivational Affirmations for Building Confidence and Recognizing Self-worth Author : Louise L. Hay Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. I have suffered from low self esteem for years and I am so glad that I am getting more confident. My husband said there is a difference. I feel stronger and sometimes used to back down in troubled situations but now I am more assertive and approach things with a much more positive attitude. […] Title : A Lifetime of Secrets: A Postsecret Book Author : Frank Warren Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Tell me a secret! Until I read this book, I only knew PostSecret from Frank Warren’s blog which is on my weekly must-read list. I had resisted buying the previous books in the series because so often what’s intriguing a few at a time becomes cloying when presented in a book. This was not the case with A LIFETIME OF SECRETS: A POSTSECRET BOOK. I couldn’t put it down until I’d read it through, and it left me feeling introspective and deeply connected. For those not familiar with PostSecret, it began as a community art project in which Frank Warren (”America’s most trusted stranger”) invited people to send in secrets on decorated postcards. Every week he posts twenty of these anonymous postcards on his blog, PostSecret.com; a collection has traveled internationally as an art exhibit; and this is the fourth book of collected secrets. So many heart-rending postcards! People share their alienation, anger, fear, desire, and even pride. Why do they send their secrets to Frank? Would you? Have you? I haven’t (and won’t), but something about the secrets has huge sympathetic appeal. There’s nothing new in human nature and we all carry the seeds of all these secrets. Some resonate in us more than others, but can you really say that any of the feelings expressed are completely alien? A LIFETIME OF SECRETS is the fourth book in the series. It’s arranged roughly by the age of the secret-sharer, and this theme is certainly effective; you can, however, open it to any page and count on feeling a sense of kinship with the writer. I hope to keep this book for a while and will probably turn its pages many times. It’s inevitable that some day I’ll hear a friend mention something and I’ll say, there’s this book I HAVE to share with you; and they’ll share it with someone else and I’ll never see it again. And that’s as it should be. (My secret: I hardly ever return books people lend me!) Title : Think and Grow Rich Author : Napoleon Hill Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Amazing. Everyoneshould have a copy of this. Title : The Life You Were Born to Live: Finding Your Life Purpose Author : Dan Millman Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : I almost put this book down…. I picked this book up whilst browsing in a bookstore; I almost put it straight back on the shelf when I realized it was “numerology” (i.e. hokum in my experience); but on impulse, I kept on reading; and in thirty minutes I was riveted. I cannot explain HOW this works; but there is an uncanny accuracy to the insights this book reveals. I found myself with a wry grin recognizing very specific, very pertinent themes that were congruent with my experience. I have now bought the book, as I feel it might prove very helpful in understanding my wife, my children and others’ life tasks. Don’t let your cynicism stop you reading this book; pick it up, apply its method, and let your heart judge its value. I think you will be (pleasantly!) surprised… Title : Screw It, Let’s Do It: Lessons in Life (Quick Reads) Author : Sir Richard Branson Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : My “desert island” personal development book I can’t remember how long ago I first read this - probably in the early 1980s. This is the book I would keep/take to a desert island if I could only have one. It’s as relevant now as it was when it was first written and my copy is battered, water-damaged, highlighted and anotated and . . . I wouldn’t part with it for anything. “Classic” is an over-used word but it genuinely does apply to this book. Truly wonderful, inspiring and mind-stretching. I come back to this again and again. Get it in any version - I have the book and the audio programme - and use it. I hope you get as much from it at each reading as I do. Title : The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness Author : Stephen R. Covey Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Interesting and Inspiring Summary of the Book Stephen Covey’s book "The 8th Habit" contains a lot of very good ideas but is rather padded. This audio CD provides a very useful summary of the key points in the book. Although it is still a bit preachy at times, it does avoid most of the homely self-indulgent anecdotes of the book. The audio CD though, has one major weakness in my view - it doesn’t spend enough time on what I feel is the most important feature of the book - the 4 Roles of Leadership. Barely 10 minutes of the CD covers this vital development plan for 21st century leaders(and that coverage is fairly poor). So read the book, reinforce the key points with the CD, and skim the book again focussing on the leadership aspects. That should help you get to grips with the material. Title : Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More Author : Joe Vitale Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Written proof and instruction on how to wipe out all problems easily and enjoyably In this amazing book Joe Vitale describes his encounters with Dr Ihaleakala Hew Len, the Hawaiian psychologist and healer, where they tell us about many different applications of the Hawaiian method Ho’oponopono. These examples cover areas like * violent inmates in a prison hospital who become calm, * a room that needed to be acknowledged before allowing a large dinner party to occupy it or * the innocence of hamburgers because the real enemy is what you think about the food Dr Hew Len teaches that we alone, each one of us, are responsible for everything outside ourselves. Joe describes the steps through the book’s many examples. Many of us would have some difficulty in recognising the situations where we could apply the extremely easy and simple steps to heal the situation by healing ourselves. Joe’s examples make it much easier to recognise where we can use this method. Trusting in gratitude, love and forgiveness enables us to lead healed lives in a healed society. Try it for a few days and you’ll see. Title : Born to Win: Transactional Analysis with Gestalt Experiments Author : Muriel James Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : The meaning of life….. If your searching to understand people, or why you are like you are then read this book. Parent, Adult and child is in us all. Look back to when you were young to see why you are like you are today - your blueprint - there from the age of 5! If your into reading information like this then I suggest you also read the original Born to Win by James and Jongeward, or I’m OK your OK, Thomas. Title : Think and Grow Rich Author : Napoleon Hill Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Classic career wisdom accessibly explained Napoleon Hill, author of this 1920s classic, will remind you of an older, wiser, slightly wacky uncle who advises you about careers, life and love. This book is a wonderful collection of tips - many based on the ideas of Hill’s mentor Andrew Carnegie - that range from the practical (how to prepare a resume) to surprisingly New Age-like mystical talk about the infinite powers of the universe. Of course, like an old uncle, Hill can get long-winded and repetitive at times, but since he packs so much wisdom into his slender book, you will want to reread it over and over again, repetitions and all. We recommend his classic compendium to everyone who is dangling from the career ladder and wondering how to prosper. Title : Born to Win: Transactional Analysis with Gestalt Experiments Author : Muriel James Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Possibly the best Self-Help book ever! Transactional Analysis and Gestalt may seem old hat these days but the basic priniples have stood the test of time. This book formed the basis of my own study of TA in the seventies and also enabled me to beat a long standing history of recurrent depression and stress-related illness. I now teach TA to medical professionals and, 30 years on, this is still the best book available! Last updated and revised on its 25th birthday in 1996 this really is a "must buy" for anyone interested in digging through the "psychobabble" to the core of what makes people, including you, tick. Title : Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People for Change Author : William R. Title : Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-free Play Author : Neil A. Fiore Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Helps you understand and overcome a crippling habit I’ve read hundreds of self-help books, but this blows almost everything else out of the water. This book helped me to understand the reasons why I procrastinate and showed how this habit leads to worry, loss of confidence and chronic underperformance - even in areas that I had not considered to be linked to procrastination. It’s like suffering a mysterious illness and feeling that, at last, there is a proper diagnosis and cure. It even shows how the classic shaming and bullying tactics others use to ’spur us on’ only serve to fuel the emotions which block natural performance and success. This is now available on audiobook, read by the author. Play it on the way to work and improve your performance! Title : The Richest Man in Babylon Author : George S. Clason Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Every teenager should be given this book at school. With personal debt at it’s highest ever level this book should be given to every child before they leave school and enter into the financial mine field and every adult should buy it. It is so simple to read, no jargon or complicated investment ideas, just good old common sense advice (which isn’t common!). The best ever financial book you could buy. Title : E-myth Mastery: The Seven Essential Disciplines for Building a World Class Company Author : Michael Gerber Rating : 1 Stars out of 5. Summary : Heavy going, heavy on psychobabble If you’re into overwrought emotional prose this ones for you. I knew how she felt by this point in the book. If you buy it read the real stuff at the end of the book, but really, don’t encourage him. To misquote the book I certainly felt like jumping off a cliff at times. If only he’d have just stuck to the business. Why does everyone have to be a cod psychologist these days? In many ways it’s a general purpose psychology book, dealing with such things as motivation, organizational skills, and how to deal with stress. It’s chock full of seemingly unique information, and interesting quotes and tidbits. For example, it states “Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.” The book isn’t boring or repetitive, and is written in a pleasing, conversational manner. Everyone should give this a read, not just those interested in business success. Author of Adjust Your Brain: A Practical Theory for Maximizing Mental Health. Title : Think and Grow Rich!: The Original Version, Restored and Revised Author : Napoleon Hill Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : What matters is reading on! I heard of this book in `Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ by KIYOSAKI for the first time. I came to realize that this book has been considered as sort of a Bible in terms of getting rich, when I checked the `customer reviews’ on the website of Amazon. So I decided to give it a try. Indeed, this book may be an eye-opener for those who just wish to become rich without thinking twice. However, frankly speaking, the so-called “secrets” as follows in this book are nothing new at all for me and maybe for you as well. Having said that, even you’ve already known the `secrets’, this book will definitely inspire you if you read on page by page. It provides you with an opportunity to converse with yourself, by which you may become a person with deep conviction of getting rich. That’s the power of this book. 1) Discipline 2) Dedication/persistence 3) Hardwork/determination 4) Practice practice practice 5) Confidence 6) Ambition along with personality Again, the `secrets’ in this book are simple. What matters to you is the process of reading on. Title : It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be Author : Paul Arden Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Motivational? This book by Paul Arden has been dubbed by many to be a fantastic motivational book that is capable of turning people into super human geniuses. In reality this book takes only an hour or less to read through and unless you really attempt to apply any new ideas will be a waste of your time. Much of the book to me was useless and some of it I already knew, however it is still a good book for getting you thinking in another way. Really the author is telling you to throw out everything you think you know and listen to his ideas of what made him successful, and some of the ideas are very good. I have found a few of the ideas in this book very useful and have used the ideas such as ‘Do not seek praise seek criticism’ are simple but good. Many people are unable to open up and be wrong and make mistakes and learn from them, especially people in positions such as management who feel they have to be seen as always correct in front of their staff. This book really is an individual thing, It may be of massive help to you or you may completely disagree with the ideas put forward. Either way you have to look at this book as one mans ideas and decide for yourself whether to apply them or take them onboard in your life. Worth a look at the price being asked for it. Although there’s nothing really wrong with this book, it didn’t help me at all. I read through it, found some interesting stuff, but my procrastination habits remained the same. Although I didn’t seriously follow any of the suggestions, because my procrastination problem is rather serious, that’s why I still gave it 4 stars, because in my situation I think it’s hard for a book to really help me. So, if you have a slight to moderate procrastination problem this book may help you. Otherwise, the best is to see a therapist. Title : Think and Grow Rich Author : Napoleon Hill Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. This smaller version, while good, contains nothing like the additional information in the “Restored and Revised” version, which I heard 2002 World Snooker Champion Peter Ebdon speaking about. There is just a wealth of fascinating facts and information in the back of the book. In the older book (the rather plain, smaller “Think and Grow Rich” this review concerns), the print is difficult to read, there is little space for jotting notes. The newer revised version reads better and by comparison is a far more useful learning instrument. Napoleon Hill’s work is probably the most important ever done, anywhere in the world, in the motivational and self-improvement field. Whichever version you read, it will change your life forever, for the better. […] Title : The Life You Were Born to Live: Finding Your Life Purpose Author : Dan Millman Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Spooky! I have to agree with most of the others - this is uncanny. As I was born by c-section I didn’t think it would apply to me but it does. When I read the section on my numbers I couldn’t believe it - it summed up exactly what I’m going through - a perfect description of my life to date. As yet the jury is still out on whether it will help me to live "the life I was born to live", I’ll get back to you on that one. I think you will be (pleasantly!) surprised… Title : Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion Author : Robert Cialdini Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Invest in Influence I first read an excerpt of Dr Cialdini’s book in a Harvard Business Review article and it was one of the few times I actually bought the book on the same day. The six universal principles of influence and persuasion are superb in their brevity and ability to work in a wide variety of situations. With Dr Cialdini backing up his writings with 50 years of social science research (not to mention his own 3 year investment of time to learn the trade secrets of many organisations, both private sector and public sector) it makes learning and using the principles of persuasion systematic and not dependant on being ‘a born sales person or natural influencer’. A fantastic read with plenty of anecdotes (backed up by research) and uses. If you buy one book on the subject of Influence and Persuasion - make it this one!. Also, for reader’s interest the book has been translated into a two-day workshop on how to best utilise the 6 principles of influence and persuasion and are run by Dr Cialdini’s outfit called Influence At Work - they have a US and UK presence. Good reading! Title : Screw It, Let’s Do It: Lessons in Life (Quick Reads) Author : Sir Richard Branson Rating : 2 Stars out of 5. Summary : Get the full story! I have read Richard Branson biography, Losing my Virginity only recently and so this book contains nothing new…too bad i bought this one. Although cheap it’s not really worth the money i have to admit. Go for his book, Losing my Virginity and you will get your money’s worth! I don’t understand the marketing strategy, if they even had one with this one! Summary : Solid Advice for the Most Common Business Problem Whenever I meet with bright, motivated business people who want to improve the world, they always complain about others in their organizations who will not cooperate in a change process. Get those reluctant people on board the progress train, and the more positive future will soon arrive. Almost never do these complainers realize that their own habits, perspective, and behavior are contributing to delaying the progress by making others oppose the initiative.Getting It Done is a wonderful book for helping each of us see ourselves as part of the problem and part of the solution in situations when many people must cooperate. That’s a first in my experience. The book builds on that valuable perspective by suggesting what skills we each need to improve, and how we can implement a process that will lead to genuine, effective progress. That is very critical, because most improvements occur because someone has designed an effective process to ease their implementation. In new areas, by definition, there is seldom such a process. My suggestion is that you try this one if you have no other.I also liked the way the authors went on to generalize about how lateral leadership (influencing peers) provides lessons for when you are the boss. The same lessons apply here as well. Influencing people through genuine involvement leads to both better solutions and to better implementation. If you only read and learn to apply one book this year, Getting It Done should be that book. My reasoning is simple. If you cannot help those you work with to make successful collaborations, you and everyone around you will always operate at a low level of effectiveness. Also, your work day will be filled with stress, conflict, pressure, too much to do, and worry. That’s not the way you want to live. Getting It Done can help you develop the skills to get the benefits of how all of us know and can do more than any one of us. When you are able to get that benefit from being in an enterprise, life becomes very interesting, rewarding, and meaningful. You will also feel good about living closer to your potential as a person. Title : Be Your Own Life Coach: How to Take Control of Your Life and Achieve Your Wildest Dreams Author : Fiona Harrold Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Life will never be the same again! Fiona’s book is just the inspiration that you need if you are procrastinating over whether or not to take that step into the unknown, - whether it’s starting your own business, or going for the promotion you’ve been working towards. It is clear from reading this book that Fiona has taken part in motivational courses, such as those held by Tony Robbins. She uses many similar quotes and examples throughout the book. This does not mean that her work is not original however. Fiona’s book is a brilliant summary on the subject of self improvement. It is full of enthusiam and stimulus to make the reader think that they can achieve a better life if they are willing to come out of their ‘comfort zones.’This book is the driving force that encouraged me to make several changes in my life and I would definitely recommend it to anyone needing the encouragement or incentive to make that change.
